Kinetic watches, also known as electronic quartz watches, are a recently developed set of watches that work with the same concept as automatic watches--being powered by the movement of the wearer’s arm. In a kinetic watch, a weighted rotor turns a tiny electrical generator, charging a rechargeable battery or capacitor which powers the quartz movement. The rechargeable battery lasts literally for decades and because of its presence in the watch, kinetic watches, in comparison to automatic watches, keep track of time for longer periods when not worn. Depending on the model, when not worn, kinetic watches can run anywhere from one to six months.
Seiko was the first company to introduce kinetic watches, with a prototype in 1986 and a commercially available one in 1988. According to a Seiko press release issued in 2007, in which they proudly celebrated the 20th anniversary of their kinetic watches, it states that since the first launch, more than eight million Seiko kinetic watches have been sold. We here at Gems4Me always strive to offer the most technologically advanced, yet beautiful watches, which is why we are proud to include Seiko kinetic watches in our large collection of watches. After looking at those, you may also be interested in looking at our Seiko automatic watches.
