Pocket Watch

The Pocket Watch has evolved over the centuries from a symbol of wealth and position to an indispensable tool used on the railroads; today it is relegated to a curiosity - a pocket watch is very rarely seen in public. But even if you are not a collector or watch enthusiast, there are many good reasons to buy one: they make an incredible gift for a lifetime, they are fascinating and fun to look at, and a pocket watch can set you apart!

The pocket watch began as a crude clock worn around the neck in the 15th and 16th centuries, until watchmakers developed the spring driven power supply, which allowed them to create smaller movements which could fit into a pocket. Watches began to be carried in pockets in the early 1500's as dress styles evolved, and were a symbol of wealth for over three centuries until they began to be mass produced. During the industrial revolution pocket watches became an indispensable tool of the railroads - conductors and engineers relied heavily on their accuracy to maintain schedules and avoid accidents. The pocket watch was quickly superceded by the wrist-worn variety in the years after World War I, during which time soldiers in the field needed to have the time readily available. As the styles changed, watches became smaller and moved out of people's pockets almost completely. Today pocket watches are kept as collector's items and dress accessories, and make the perfect present for your horologically oriented other.

Gems4Me, with its variety of pocket watches, has something for everyone. We have new and antique pocket watches designs, as well as mechanical, and quartz pocket watches in gold, silver, sterling silver, and stainless steel.
