What are automatic watches? An automatic watch (also known as a self-winding watch) is a mechanical watch (another term used to define automatic watches) that keeps track of the time on it automatically through the natural motion of the wearer’s arm. A more technical answer as to what an automatic watch is, is one in which the mainspring is wound automatically by the wearer’s arm. After reading that, you are probably asking, “Well, what happens when I don’t move or when the watch is off my wrist?”. The answer is that the automatic watch, without any movement made to it, will still continue to work for a period of roughly up to two days, because when the watch was being moved through your arm movements, it was storing energy. So, you can take your automatic watch off without worry about the time stopping.

At this point in time you are probably asking yourself, “Well, what happens if I leave the watch off for longer than two days?”. The answer is to simply wind the watch, a feature in place for this very reason and also in case someone’s arm movements are very infrequent.

What’s the advantage of an automatic watch? The answer is that there is no need for a battery, so you never have to worry about changing the battery, and all the hassles that normally are involved, like needing to have an expert open up the watch to change it in order to avoid damage to the watch, finding the expert to change the battery, finding the battery, which can be tough for older watch models, and paying a high fee to have the battery changed. Another advantage of an automatic watch is its accuracy. The time kept by automatic watches is generally considered to be more accurate than battery powered watches.

In order to maintain the accuracy of time on an automatic watch, it should be worn to prevent its lubricants from congealing over time. Additionally, every five years a full service, which involves disassembly, cleaning, and re-lubrication, should be done on the watch in order to keep the movement as accurate as possible.

If you will not be wearing your automatic watch for long periods of time, or if you have multiple automatic watches, and don’t want to have to wind it or the several watches, you can purchase winders, which will automatically wind your watch for you, thus giving you the convenience of simply picking up your watch, already wound, when not worn for more than two days.

Automatic watches, though they share the same technology, vary in size, shape, colors, and in the additional features added to them, which provide additional purposes for owning an automatic watch. For example, we have automatic divers watches, automatic skeleton watches, and even automatic watches with illumination, like our Traser H3 Classic Automatic Pro Blue watch.

Another set of recently developed watches that works with the same concept (being powered by the movement of the wearer’s arm) as automatic watches are those that are called kinetic watches or electronic quartz watches. In a kinetic watch, a weighted rotor turns a tiny electrical generator, charging a rechargeable battery or capacitor which powers the quartz movement. The rechargeable battery lasts literally for decades and because of its presence in the watch, kinetic watches, in comparison to automatic watches, keep track of time for longer periods when not worn. Depending on the model, when not worn, kinetic watches can run anywhere from one to six months.

Seiko was the first company to introduce kinetic watches, with a prototype in 1986 and a commercially available one in 1988. According to a Seiko press release issued in 2007, in which they proudly celebrated the 20th anniversary of their kinetic watches, it states that since the first launch, more than eight million Seiko kinetic watches have been sold. We here at Gems4Me always strive to offer the most technologically advanced, yet beautiful watches, which is why we are proud to include Seiko kinetic watches in our large collection of watches. After looking at those, you may also be interested in looking at our Seiko automatic watches.

Now that you are very knowledgeable about automatic and kinetic watches, you can make a purchase with pride as you wear a watch that’s technologically simple in how its powered, yet technologically advanced in how it converts your arm movements into energy or electricity, and also environmentally friendly, since there is either no battery (in the case of automatic watches), or one that will last for decades (in the case of a kinetic watch). If you have any questions whatsoever, don’t hesitate to contact us via chat, email, or by telephone. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff here at Gems4Me will be glad to answer your questions and assist you in making your watch purchase.
